Ebook About New from USA Today Bestselling Author, Jean Grainger. An Irish country doctor is sickened by all he saw in the First World War. His children are now determined to fight in World War 2. How far can you stretch the ties that bind a family? In the turbulent and uncertain times of Ireland in 1919, the birth of two children revitalise a small town. Dr. Richard Buckley returns home to his wife and beloved hometown of Dunderrig, weary and heart-sick over the horror and pointlessness of The Great War. Soon, trouble is coming from all sides—Richard’s unhappy wife leaves Dunderrig, and a Nazi occupied Europe marches steadily closer to home. In the blink of an eye, the peace he’d craved and enjoyed since his days on the battlefield are gone. Meantime, James and Juliet come of age in a world on the brink of chaos, where the remnants of rebellion at home have snowballed into the horrors of yet another world war. Their father doesn’t see the twins choosing different paths—dangerous paths—that will test everything, including their love for their country, their family, and each other. Historically rich and moving, the tale of two children from the Irish countryside caught in the throes of wartime Europe is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and its willingness to endure.Experience this critical time in history like never before in So Much Owed. This is one of the best historical fiction novels I have ever read. The story is not only engaging, it is intriguing and gives real insight into the life and times of a family just after WW I and through WW II. Ms. Grainger has a knack for developing her characters and in so doing she takes the reader on their individual journeys of self discovery and growth. I very much like Ms. Grainer's style of writing. Her descriptions of the countryside, the times, the apparel, the settings are so detailed I feel as if I am a part of the story. I shall continue to seek out Ms. Grainger's books in hopes they are all as good as this one. The book had a great story line, as all of Jean Grainger's books do. It was lovely to read about the twins childhood. I gave the book a lower rating due to the poor morals of some of the women in the book. In the time period the book described, I can't imagine a women to women talk about using condoms, or admitting to having a lover. The quick and easy way the twins agree to their first experience of sex was unnecessary to the story, and cheapened the book. The author made it seem that pre-marital sex, and living with a married man who "couldn't divorce" were normal parts of the society in those days. I doubt that was the case, and in addition, there seemed to be a thinly veiled dig into the Catholic church, as if the Church is the "spoiler of fun." I am tired of starting a good book, only to have a raunchy immoral scene described. Although, some may think this is a selling point, in reality, more think some things should be kept private. The story would have been better without adding unnecessary sex, and talks about the "facts of life."
